WTF: Website Tactics for Franchises - a newsletter with Madalina Iordache

TL;DR (Too Long; Didn’t Read)

Welcome to WTF: Website Tactics for Franchises, Madalina Iordache’s newsletter where she shares the good, the bad, and thFranchise website optimizatione baffling in the world of franchise websites. This edition brings back her infamous mango tree with a plot twist: after eight fruitless years, a small change finally produced flowers.

  • A website can look healthy and receive plenty of attention while still being optimized for the wrong outcomes.
  • Technical SEO, hosting, UX, content quality, and conversion paths are all β€œinputs” that can quietly limit performance.
  • Before assuming you need a full redesign, audit what you already have. Sometimes the right strategic adjustment can unlock better results without replacing the entire website.

The Mango Tree Writes Back

Last year,Β I complained about our mango tree.

You might remember it β€” gorgeous, lush, full crown, fresh red tips every few months. Grew from a pit we tossed in the compost bin. It thrived. It got tall. It just… didn’t fruit.

My husband threatened to cut it down. I kept defending it, saying β€œit’s not its fault!”

Well.

Turns out my husband reads my newsletter. (Hi, Alex.)

And this spring, after some pondering, before he fired up the chainsaw, he did a little ChatGPT research. Typed in the symptoms. Got a diagnosis. And discovered that the fertilizer he’d been using for years was the wrong one. It was great at growing leaves, roots, and branches. Spectacular at it, actually. Just completely useless for producing fruit.

The tree wasn’t bad.Β It was getting the wrong input.

Five minutes of prompting. Two days of Amazon delivery. And he had the right fertilizer: 0-0-40 rather than 10-10-10. (I still don’t know exactly what that means, but I trust the process.)

And this spring, for the first time EVER, our mango tree has flowers.

Full of them.

Now, I haven’t tasted a mango yet. There’s still the whole β€œturning flowers into fruit” part. But that’s a major step in the right direction. After 8 years of beautiful, fruitless growth β€” something has finally shifted.

Β

WTF Moment: You Might Have the Wrong Fertilizer

Here’s what I said last year: organic leads β€” the free mangos from your website β€” don’t happen accidentally. You have to plan for them.

But here’s the update to that lesson:Β if you’ve been doing the work and still not seeing fruit, the problem might not be effort. It might be the formula.

A lot of franchise websites are doing the 10-10-10 equivalent β€” they’re active, updated, they’re technically alive. But they’re optimized for the wrong thing. They draw traffic that doesn’t convert. They attract visitors who don’t enter funnels. They look like thriving trees without mangos.

And yes β€” sometimes the algorithm shifts. User behavior changes. What worked five years ago might be growing you a beautiful, leafy, completely fruitless website today.

The fix might not be as dramatic as you think.

It’s probably not tearing everything down and starting over. It’s asking:Β what’s missing from the formula?Β Then finding it, applying it, and waiting to see the flowers.

Β

The Fixes That Look Small But Aren’t

Here are the kinds of β€œfertilizer swaps” I see that make a real difference β€” without a full rebuild:

1. Fix the technical stuff nobody talks about.Β Core Web Vitals, site speed, crawl errors, broken links. These are silent traffic-killers. Your site can look fine while staying invisible in the search results. A technical SEO audit often uncovers issues that, once fixed, improve performance significantly β€” no redesign needed.

2. Pick better hosting.Β I’ve seen this single change stop a site from crashing. It’s not glamorous. Nobody puts it in a case study. But the right hosting environment is infrastructure, and infrastructure matters.

3. Humanize the design.Β Sterile websites don’t convert. If your site feels like a brochure designed for no one in particular, small UX and design improvements β€” better imagery, clearer hierarchy, messaging that speaks to your ideal franchisee or customer β€” can shift the whole experience.

4. Audit the content honestly.Β Those 3,000-word blog posts from 2019 that used to drive traffic might be getting cobwebs now β€” or worse, dragging down your overall quality signals. Restructure them. Make them useful to today’s reader. Remove what’s irrelevant. Add what’s missing.

The theme here is the same as the mango:Β you don’t always need a new tree. You might just need the right formula.

Β

So, What’s In Your Fertilizer Bag?

If your website is beautiful but not producing leads, don’t panic β€” and don’t default to β€œrebuild everything.”

Start by asking what it’s been fed.

Look at your SEO strategy, your content mix, your technical health, your conversion paths. Something in that formula might be encouraging the wrong kind of growth. And the right adjustment β€” even a small one β€” can be the difference between another season of just leaves and finally, FINALLY seeing flowers.

The solution might be one deep audit and a few weeks of fixes away. (Unfortunately, you can’t order that on Amazon Prime.)
